A sanitary pumping station and 16” diameter force main serving the Village of Richfield has a history of transient pressure surges (water hammer) and began to experience frequent main breaks. CTI was contacted to perform a transient analysis of the pumping system and recommend improvements to alleviate water hammer and minimize the likelihood of future main breaks.
A transient computer model was developed to study the existing system and potential improvements to minimize the transient response of the system. The 30-year-old pump station is nearing the end of its expected useful life, so multiple surge protection devices and station operating changes were evaluated which could be implemented if the Village decides to maintain, rehabilitate, or completely replace the station. A phased force main repair and inspection project was conceived to be implemented following selection and construction of pump station improvements.
