Community Park Improvements Focus on Erosion Control & Green Infrastructure

Problem

Unity Point Park is located where the Oostanaula and Etowah Rivers meet, joining the Coosa River in downtown Rome, Georgia. Built in 1996 for the Atlanta Olympics, the park suffered from erosion and neglect over the years. Due to unsafe conditions, it had to be closed to the public.

Solution

The solution included restoring and stabilizing the Oostanaula and Etowah Rivers, and completely renovating the park. Instead of hard surfaces, the park will feature more green spaces with rain gardens and permeable pavers to improve water quality. Paths and viewing areas are designed to meet ADA accessibility standards.

Project Elements

  • Topographic survey
  • Modeling of existing and proposed site conditions
  • Extensive permitting: GEAEPD Buffer Variance, USACE Nationwide, and state/local permits required for project approval
