Solid Waste

City Landfill at Birchwood Area 3 – New Cell Design

Problem

Modifications were needed to expand the Birchwood Landfill to increase capacity. The expansion required site preparation including clearing, grubbing, 1.1 million cubic yards of mass excavation and grading to subgrade elevation, followed by recompacted soil and geosynthetic liner construction.

Solution

Engineering services were performed to comply with Tennessee Solid Waste Management regulations related to lining and opening the 50-acre municipal solid waste landfill (Class I). Several sedimentation/detention basins with associated ditches, piping, and outfall structures were installed. A 20-acre cell was constructed with a two-foot-thick clay liner, geomembrane, and leachate collection system.
